3G Development in China March 1-7

- Chinese telecom operator China Telecom announced on March 5 that the company and 100 other companies formed an alliance, dubbed the CDMA 2000 (Code Division Multiple Access) Cellphone Design and Development Industry Alliance), in Beijing, with an aim to boots its presence in the 3G market, the Xinhua News reported on March 6. Aside from China Mobile, other alliance members include Qualcomm, Microsoft, Huawei, ZTE, Datang Telecom, and Samsung.

 

- China Unicom will achieve the pan-China WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) network coverage in the first half of 2010, the Sohu IT News reported on March 7, quoting the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of China Unicom, Chang Xiaobing. Should the full network coverage be completed, users in all prefecture-level and above cities will be able to access China Unicom's WCDMA service. Chang said that China Unicom will also enhance the quality of the indoor WCDMA coverage in some key cities such as Beijing.

 

In addition, China Unicom stated that the company is set to launch Smartphone models running on Google's open source Android platform some time in March 2010. This Android phone reportedly will be compatible with WCDMA, and Wi-Fi/WAPI (Wireless Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure). China Unicom also stated that the company is currently collaborating with Apple, with an aim to introduce an iPhone featuring Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity) functions to tap the market demand for Wi-Fi enabled iPhone, Dow Jones reported on March 6.
